MGH Research Scholars

A philanthropic initiative that provides unrestricted funding for forward-thinking medical researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital.

To support and recognize our best and brightest early- to mid-career scientific talent, the MGH Research Scholars program was launched in 2011. It has become Mass General’s premier awards program for research, designed to promote bold breakthroughs in medicine by providing our top up-and-coming scientists from across the hospital with flexible, unrestricted funding to pursue their most innovative ideas — ideas often considered too “risky” or “outside the box” for traditional funding sources.

How it works: This first-of-its-kind philanthropic initiative fuels talented, forward-thinking scientists with the unrestricted funding they need to drive their work to new and uncharted territories. Scientists and physician-scientists honored with this highly competitive and coveted annual award receive $500,000 over five years.

Not only do MGH Research Scholars go on to transform the landscape of healthcare with their discoveries, they also go on to serve as future leaders of research within our hospital, community, nation and world.

Since 2011, thanks to the support of many generous families, 84 MGH Research Scholar awards have been bestowed.

Making a gift to the MGH Research Scholars program

Donors who make a gift of $500,000 are offered a naming opportunity whereby an MGH Research Scholar awardee will carry that named title for five years. Donors and named MGH Research Scholars have a unique opportunity to form an ongoing relationship through laboratory tours and special research updates to follow their science as it leads to the next bold breakthrough.

A gift of any size to the MGH Research Scholars program ensures that extraordinary scientists spend their time doing what they do best: driving forward the innovative and groundbreaking research that is transforming the future of medicine.
