Dear Colleagues,

For the past 30 years, Jeannie T. Lee, MD, PhD, has shared her vast knowledge, her deep passion and her unyielding dedication to excellence with the Massachusetts General Hospital community and beyond. Today, I am delighted to announce Dr. Lee will continue to share her talents and expertise as Chair of Mass General’s Department of Molecular Biology, effective March 16, 2024.

Jeannie T. Lee, MD, PhD
Jeannie T. Lee, MD, PhD

Dr. Lee is the Phillip A. Sharp, PhD, Endowed Chair in Molecular Biology and Professor of Genetics (and Pathology) at Harvard Medical School. She served as the Department of Molecular Biology’s Vice Chair from 2019 until January 2023 when she was appointed as its interim Chair.

A graduate of Harvard University, Dr. Lee received both her medical and doctoral degrees from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. In 1997, she became chief resident of Clinical Pathology at Mass General while completing her postdoctoral work at the Whitehead Institute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Lee’s research specializes in the study of epigenetic regulation by long noncoding RNAs and uses X-chromosome inactivation as a model system.

While overseeing our esteemed Department of Molecular Biology over the past year, Dr. Lee has proven to be a highly strategic leader who — thanks to her commitment to education, supporting scientists and advancing research — has positioned the department for continued success. We look forward to her working to expand the vision for Molecular Biology, while prioritizing innovation by recruiting scientists at the forefront of basic and translational research.

As we formally congratulate and welcome Dr. Lee into her new role, I’d like to extend my deepest gratitude to the members of the search committee — skillfully led by David Fisher, MD, PhD, Chair of Dermatology — for their time and commitment in identifying outstanding candidates and ensuring we secured the best leader to guide and shape the department into the future.

Thank you,
David F. M. Brown, MD
President, Massachusetts General Hospital
