Gerard M. Doherty, MD, Named MGB Chair of Surgery

As part of Mass General Brigham’s (MGB) larger effort to integrate care and services across academic medical centers, Gerard M. Doherty, MD, was recently appointed chair of MGB’s integrated Department of Surgery.

Gerard M. Doherty, MD, has accepted the role of Mass General Brigham (MGB) chair of surgery, effective June 1, 2025.

Dr. Doherty is a committed surgeon-scientist, educator and mentor. As a practicing surgical oncologist, the Moseley Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and the surgeon-in-chief at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) since 2016, he brings a wealth of experience from his key leadership roles at Boston Medical Center, Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Michigan. Additionally, he has served as surgeon-in-chief for the MGB Cancer Institute, a role he will step out of once a successor is named.

As a leading educator, Dr. Doherty has transformed training programs at several organizations, creating innumerable opportunities for trainees across the country. Dr. Doherty is a passionate advocate for early- and mid-career physicians and professionals, championing the growth and development of many new and emerging leaders.
