Tim Andrews, Massachusetts General Hospital’s second patient to undergo a pig kidney transplant, threw out the first pitch at the Boston Red Sox game at Fenway Park on June 16, 2025. He was joined by his wife, Karen, other family members and his doctors, Leonardo Riella, MD, PhD, medical director for kidney transplantation, and Tatsuo Kawai, MD, PhD, director of the Legorreta Center for Clinical Transplant Tolerance. The occasion signified a major milestone — 137 days since his surgery in January, making him the longest living recipient of a pig kidney.

Mass General Brigham’s excellence in xenotransplantation marks the system’s dedication to address the organ shortage crisis by bringing hope to patients worldwide through xenotransplantation.
