Jose Florez, MD, PhD, has accepted the role of Mass General Brigham (MGB) chair of medicine, effective June 1, 2025.

Currently the chair of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Florez has been a dedicated member of our community for nearly three decades. He joined Mass General in 1997 to train in neurology and internal medicine, later completing a fellowship in endocrinology before joining the faculty. He holds the Jackson Clinical Professor Chair in Medicine at Harvard Medical School and has previously served as chief of both the Endocrine Division and the Diabetes Unit at Mass General.

Dr. Florez’s globally recognized research on the clinical translation of genetic findings in type 2 diabetes has made significant contributions to the field. He founded Mass General’s Down Syndrome Program and played a pivotal role in launching the Diabetes in Pregnancy Service, the Diabetes Genetics Clinic and the Endocrine Hypertension Clinic. A passionate mentor and advocate, Dr. Florez has prioritized supporting future physician-scientists, guiding and championing countless students, residents and junior faculty over the years.

Additionally, Dr. Florez has named Bruce Levy, MD, to the role of interim executive vice chair of medicine while a search is being conducted for that role. Dr. Levy has provided steadfast leadership of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) Department of Medicine. Over the last three years, he has served as chair of the department — including a year in an interim capacity — following his roles as chief of the BWH Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care and co-director of the BWH Lung Center. Dr. Levy also holds the Hersey Professor of the Theory and Practice of Physics at Harvard Medical School.

“Dr. Florez’s commitment to our mission is reflected in his tireless efforts to enhance patient health and train the next generation of leaders in Medicine,” says David F. M. Brown, MD, president of academic medical centers for MGB. “Under his leadership, I know that our two great Departments of Medicine will seamlessly come together and build upon the impressive foundations of each to be an unstoppable force in patient care, discovery and education, grounded in a deep and lasting commitment to the communities we serve.”
