For more than a year, colleagues across the organization have come together to develop and implement a forward-looking strategy and vision for Mass General Brigham (MGB)’s cancer program — one that is focused on expanding clinical and academic resources by creating the MGB Cancer Institute and investing in people and initiatives that will shape the future of cancer care, research and education.

A critical step in this work is appointing the MGB Cancer Institute president, and following a national search process, David Ryan, MD, has been named the inaugural president of the MGB Cancer Institute.

“We are thrilled Dr. Ryan has accepted this new role to lead our efforts to build our Cancer Institute,” says David F. M. Brown, MD, president of academic medical centers for Mass General Brigham. “He will oversee our clinical care, research, education and community-based missions as we work together to enhance quality outcomes for every patient and expand our leadership in cutting-edge discovery and research-infused care.”

Dr. Ryan has been a medical oncologist at Mass General Brigham for more than two decades. He has served as physician-in-chief for the MGB Cancer Institute for the past year. He has also served as the chief of hematology/oncology and clinical director of the Mass General Cancer Center since 2012. With a career dedicated to gastrointestinal malignancies, his expertise extends to designing and conducting clinical trials. He is also the Britain W. Nicholson Endowed Cancer Chair at MGB and the Shelby Memorial Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Ryan’s contributions have earned him recognition on national committees, including clinical task forces for the National Cancer Institute, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

“We are confident that, with Dr. Ryan’s leadership and partnership, we can extend the horizon of scientific discovery and innovation,” says Dr. Brown. “Building on the strong foundation in cancer excellence, we will continue to improve cancer care for our patients over the entirety of their lifetimes and needs.”
