The Spirit of Children program, sponsored by retailer Spirit Halloween, is helping to make the hospital a less scary place for children and their families.

Spirit Halloween LogoSince 2006, the Spirit of Children program, sponsored by Spirit Halloween, the nation’s largest seasonal Halloween retailer, has helped bring smiles and joy to Mass General’s youngest patients. Each year the Spirit of Children program delivers fun and entertainment to MassGeneral Hospital for Children by sponsoring and hosting an annual Halloween party, complete with costumes, face painting, pumpkin decorating and a wide range of crafts, games and gifts. The event is staffed by volunteers from Spirit Halloween.

The Spirit of Children Program was founded upon the idea that a great holiday should do great good.  It is guided by the mission to provide fun and funding to children’s hospitals, not just at Halloween, but all year long. Spirit Halloween is able to fulfill this mission by enabling its dedicated and loyal customers as well as vendor partners to participate in helping to bring smiles to pediatric patients throughout North America.

Spirit Halloween stores throughout the US and Canada collect money from their customers and vendor partners from the day their stores open until the day they close. All of the money collected is donated to the child life departments at their participating children’s hospitals.  It is used to fund entertaining and fun programs throughout the year as well as to purchase much needed equipment all in an effort to make the hospital less scary for kids and their families.

Since the program first started its fundraising campaign, more than $16 million has been donated to over 130 children’s hospitals throughout the US and Canada.  More than $160,000 has gone to the Child Life Department at MGHfC. Ashley Reardon, a child life specialist at MGHfC, describes the year-long benefits of this program. “Spirit Halloween’s continuous generosity has allowed our staff to carry out their mission of making the hospital less scary for children and their families,” she says. “Our playrooms and waiting areas are fully stocked with the many items that bring much comfort and familiarity to children, especially those in the hospital.”

The oldest provider of pediatric services in Boston, MGHfC has delivered comprehensive, compassionate care to children since 1821. Companies like Spirit Halloween help make this possible. With more than 300 physicians, 50 medical specialties, 15 surgical services, and preventive and primary care, MGHfC is an invaluable resource for the healthcare needs of infants, children and adolescents. MGHfC has the expertise and experience — as well as the state-of-the-art facilities and technologies — to provide exceptional care for patients.
