Members of the oncology nursing staff of Mass General’s Lunder 9 Cancer Care Unit were recently honored for their commitment to exceptional care by the grateful family of a former patient. Like many patients receiving treatment in the inpatient oncology unit, Michael MacDonald spent months at a time on Lunder 9 during his battle with thyroid cancer before passing away on April 17, 2013. Touched by the extraordinary care Michael received during his extended stays on Lunder 9, the MacDonald family chose to honor Michael’s memory by raising funds for the floor’s nurses and palliative care team. The family hosted the first Michael J. MacDonald Lunder 9 Cancer Care Unit Fundraiser this past July at The River Club in Scituate, Mass. Through an evening of food, dancing, raffles and auctions, the MacDonalds succeeded in raising more than $8,000 for the Lunder 9 unit and the Mass General Cancer Center.
“From the remarkable, caring nurses to the heroic palliative team who indeed kept my father alive with us for as long as he could fight – the Lunder 9 team is outstanding.”
On Aug. 22, Michael’s wife, Donna, and children, Michaela, Leah, and Michael Jr. returned to Lunder 9 to present their check and a commemorative plaque to the oncology nursing staff. During the reception, the MacDonald family shared their memories of Michael’s courage during treatment, noting just how much he appreciated the compassion and kindness of the staff during his stay at Mass General. Michael’s daughter, Michaela, conveyed the family’s gratitude for the incredible quality of care provided to her father. “From the remarkable, caring nurses to the heroic palliative team who indeed kept my father alive with us for as long as he could fight – the Lunder 9 team is outstanding,” she said.
Barbara Cashavelly, RN, nursing director of Lunder 9 accepted the check on behalf of the staff. Overwhelmed by the family’s generosity and outpouring of support for the unit, she expressed her appreciation to the family for hosting an event to benefit the hardworking and committed nurses.
The money raised by the MacDonalds will support Lunder 9 nursing education, professional conferences and unit projects.
