The one hundred gala held by the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center is a time to celebrate individuals and organizations that have contributed to the fight against cancer. In its sixth year, the annual event raised more than $1.3 million and brought 900 attendees to the Westin Boston Waterfront on June 5. Actor John Krasinski, a Newton native, hosted the gala.

“I promise you that every year we will celebrate the one hundred until cancer is no longer the scourge that it is today,” Mass General Cancer Center Director Dr. Daniel Haber told those gathered.

Honorees were selected from nearly 750 nominations received from across the United States. Those nominations shared the compassionate and courageous actions of scientists, caregivers, patients, advocates, volunteers and philanthropists.

Several of the 100 honorees’ stories were highlighted during the event. They included Bruce Chabner, MD, who was honored for his dedication and compassionate leadership. Dr. Chabner served as chief of Hematology/Oncology at the Mass General Cancer Center and is currently director of clinical research. He led the development of Taxol as well as high-dose chemotherapy regimens and now-standard therapies for lymphoma. In addition, Dr. Chabner trained and mentored generations of oncologists, including those leading the field today.

Connecting Patients to Superb Care

Mass General oncology social worker Stephanie Quinn, MSW, LICSW, was recognized for helping a 24-year-old man with cancer. Quinn arranged visas and housing for his parents, so that they could travel from China to be with him. She also made arrangements so the man could be presented with his diploma from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He died less than 12 hours after that special event.

And the Lazarex Cancer Foundation was honored for channeling millions of dollars into connecting end-stage cancer patients to state-of-the-art cancer care through clinical trials. Business owner and philanthropist Dana Dornsife is an advocate and champion for the medically underserved.

The one hundred raises money to support cancer research, patient care, education programs and community outreach at the Mass General Cancer Center. President of The Kraft Group Jonathan Kraft and his wife, Patti, and Vicary Graham, regional president at BNY Mellon Wealth Management, co-chaired the 2013 event.

Mr. Kraft paid tribute to the 2013 Mass General Marathon Team, Fighting Kids’ Cancer…One Step at a Time. Many members of the team joined him onstage, including team captain and chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Howard Weinstein, MD.

In a video message from England, former event host-Matt Damon recommitted to coming back for the event in 2014, along with his “pinch-hitter” host, Krasinski.
