Patients and their families revere Yi-Bin Chen, MD, a clinician and researcher at the Mass General Cancer Center who specializes in bone marrow-stem cell transplantation.

“When my husband was diagnosed with leukemia in December 2010, he was 25 years old and I was 12 weeks pregnant,” writes Charlotte Richard. “First treated by Dr. Amir Fathi, Nate achieved complete remission. The decision was made for Nate to undergo stem cell transplantation because he had a sibling match. Dr. Chen then became Nate’s doctor. From the beginning, he inspired our trust.

“When our daughter was born in July 2011, Dr. Chen, Dr. Fathi and nurse practitioner Jessica Driscoll, NP gave her a blanket and her first book, Make Way for Ducklings. Dr. Chen held our daughter, and he has watched her grow with us. He has become a member of our family. Our daughter will always know him as the man who saved her daddy’s life.”

Amy Dittrich writes, “Dr. Chen treated my sister-in-law, Cara Rogers, throughout her long battle with acute myeloid leukemia. He understood Cara’s needs, wishes and fears. He was in awe of the strength, tenacity and courage of his 98-pound patient. Dr. Chen and Cara shared a birthday, mutual respect and many laughs. He gave her hope when the numbers did not. He gave us more time with Cara and we are forever grateful.”
