The Moonlight and Miracles Committee raises funds to enhance cancer services at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, Mass. Its first event, held seven years ago, was a cocktail party that raised $70,000. Run by a volunteer committee with assistance from the South Shore Hospital Foundation, the party has become an annual event, raising in excess of $1.25 million to date.
Now known as the Moonlight and Miracles Gala, the event helped to fund the new Dana Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center, a clinical affiliation with the South Shore Hospital that opened in October 2009.
Driven to ensure local access to high quality cancer care, these volunteers have become dynamic fundraisers. Their party is now the cancer center’s single largest fundraising event.
Many on the committee are survivors themselves and they extend their devotion and community spirit to each other. When one member had to withdraw for his own cancer treatment, the entire committee helped his family with meals, rides and support.
The Moonlight and Miracles Committee is already planning its next gala, aiming even higher with its fundraising goals.
