A long-time supporter of higher education institutions around the world, Santander announced its first philanthropic commitment to an academic medical center in April 2013, when it pledged more than $1 million over five years to support the Mass General Cancer Center through its Santander Universities division. The donation established the Santander Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program Fund, covering the expenses of fellows conducting research in the laboratories at MGH, MIT and Harvard University. Recipients have the benefit of extending the length and depth of their critical research projects without the worry of continually securing additional funding for their work. Through its generosity, Santander supports both the fellows and the search for a cure.
Additionally, Santander committed $150,000 over three years to the Friends of the Mass General Cancer Center which underwrites supportive care programming for patients of the Cancer Center. The quality of life programming initiative delivers complementary forms of care and comfort to cancer patients at no additional cost — a welcome gift at a time that is both emotionally and financially challenging for families.
Santander sets an inspiring example of corporate partnership by contributing to the advancement of health care, cancer research, the caregivers of Mass General and the patients and families who rely on them, as a result of this remarkable partnership.
