Inspired by her own personal connection to celiac disease, Maureen Leonard, MD, MMSc, the clinical director for Celiac Research and Treatment at Mass General Brigham for Children, is spearheading a study aimed at understanding why some children develop celiac and others don’t.
Sharing a moving letter, Dr. Leonard describes why she is compelled to prevent the disease for future generations. By putting together the puzzle pieces — genes, the environment, and the microbiome — her study could someday lead to better treatments and even prevent celiac and conditions like diabetes, multiple sclerosis and food allergies.
