The one hundred honoree: Nicola Gribbin, BSN, RN, OCN

In March 2008, William Stuntz was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer. Soon after, he began chemotherapy at the Mass General Cancer Center. Throughout more than two years of treatment, Nicola Gribbin, BSN, RN, OCN, was his infusion nurse.

William credits the success of his treatment to Nicola’s great skill, devotion and positive spirit.

With vigilance and expertise, Nicola helped her patient preserve his energy and reduce his nausea. “Even when I wasn’t asking for help, she’d provide it,” says William. “Her suggestions always helped make treatment a little less ugly, and a little more humane.”

William also valued Nicola’s attention to all aspects of his care. “She could size up and smoke out problems before I knew I had them,” says William. “She asks the right questions. And she is a terrific listener.”

Along with her expertise, Nicola brings her patients unfailing good cheer. “Nikki’s smile lights up a room,” says William, “and her patients see that smile all the time. Chemotherapy beats patients down. But it’s hard to feel beaten down when being cared for so well, and with such joy.”
