Over the past 10 years, many have witnessed the extraordinary care and compassion that Jeanne Vaughn provides to her oncology patients on a daily basis at the Mass General Cancer Center.
Jeanne is an expert clinician, a collaborative team member and a wonderful caregiver. Jeanne is truly gifted at engaging patients and their loved ones in difficult end-of-life conversations. Her expertise in handling these difficult conversations with patients and families has made her a valuable resource for her colleagues, often providing them with advice and guidance on how to approach these heartbreaking discussions with their own patients.
One patient, a 45-year-old woman with two young children, was dying of advanced gastrointestinal cancer. Jeanne guided her on how to tell her children, husband and family, and how to say goodbye to each of them. Jeanne’s reassurance and support helped the patient and family through what was undoubtedly the most difficult moments of their lives. This patient died peacefully 48 hours later. This is only one of many examples where Jeanne has provided a patient and family members with guidance and comfort at a time when it is needed most.
Jeanne’s colleagues are grateful that she is part of their team, helping to provide patients and their families with the best of care.
