The one hundred honoree: Howard J. Weinstein, MD

by
Mass General Giving

Bringing boundless devotion to his young patients as well as top-notch medical and research expertise, Howard Weinstein, MD, is revered by patients, families and colleagues — as well as the team he recruits to join him in raising funds for research by running in the Boston Marathon. Dr. Weinstein has run the race 22 times in honor of his patients and has raised $800,000.

The chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the MassGeneral Hospital for Children Cancer Center, Dr. Weinstein is both a compassionate caregiver and a researcher dedicated to bringing the best care to children with cancer.

Ron Gerace came to know Dr. Weinstein in October 1998, when his son Matthew, then age 6, was diagnosed with leukemia. “Dr. Weinstein became Matthew’s doctor and chief optimist,” writes Ron. “He inspired confidence with his command of the situation and clear plan tailored to Matt’s disease.”

Under Dr. Weinstein’s care, Matthew achieved fast remission and then entered a research test protocol that promised few long-term side effects. “Dr. Weinstein was always with us, whatever came up. And he’d ask about Matt’s school work and lacrosse.”

Now, Matt is a college sophomore with interest in medical school and a passion for life sciences — both inspired by Dr. Weinstein. Ron writes, “I can’t think of a greater tribute to a caregiver than to have a young patient grow and want to follow a similar path.”
