When Grace Cohen was eight years old, her mother, Deborah, was diagnosed with cancer for the second time. Grace, a thoughtful young girl and budding photographer, wanted to do something to help. Grace took photos of nature and turned them into note cards, which she sold to benefit cancer care and research.
Today, at age 11, Grace has had her work and photographs showcased in the Boston Globe, the Eagle Tribune, Merrimack Valley Magazine, North Shore Magazine and at local fairs. Most recently, her photographs were hung at the entrance of the Radiation Oncology Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital.
She is an active volunteer at fundraising events and walks, and has spoken about her family’s experience with cancer at her Girl Scout troop meetings and her temple. In addition, she has enlisted her little sister, Abby, and her Girl Scout troop to help support The Jimmy Fund’s Scooper Bowl.
In December 2011, 2013 and 2014, Grace and her mother visited The Jimmy Fund at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and presented checks totaling $1,500. She was also able to donate to the Vernon Cancer Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital where her mother and grandmother were treated. With young leaders like Grace, the future seems brighter indeed.
