As a practice nurse at the North Shore Cancer Center (NSCC) for more than 20 years, Betty Maloney, RN, has touched the lives of thousands of patients and hundreds of staff members. In the words of her colleague, Erica Linden, MD, “Betty has dedicated her life to serving patient needs through direct clinical care and by transforming the care system.” She is often the first point of contact for new patients, orienting them to the multidisciplinary clinic model she has been instrumental in developing at NSCC. During an emotional and stressful time for newly diagnosed patients, she is reassuring when answering questions, compassionate when faced with concerns and offers laughter and empathy throughout the patient experience.
In her role as lead practice nurse, Betty tackles new challenges every day with a focus on patient needs and staff success. Whether managing conflict resolution, setting new goals for quality improvement or spearheading the peer review process, she continues to help the center grow. Now a member of the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center team, Betty ensures continuous care for a large patient population by collaborating with providers in Danvers and Boston.
Betty’s empathy shines in every interaction. Having experienced cancer within her own family, she brings true sensitivity to patient care and is a strong advocate for patients and families. As a resource for her colleagues, she can always find time in her hectic day to listen and provide guidance. Says Erica, “Betty is a rock.”
