Dear Friends,
Two and a half years ago, I was humbled to accept the honor and responsibility of serving as president of Massachusetts General Hospital after spending more than three decades learning, teaching and leading as an Emergency Department physician and as Chair from 2013-2021. I was called to the presidency because I believe in our vision for Mass General Brigham as an integrated academic medical system with patients at the center — one that brings its resources together to provide the best care for our patients, from the most familiar and routine illnesses and injuries to the most complex medical problems. I knew Mass General could be a leader in sharing, across the system, our founders’ vision: “When in distress, every person becomes our neighbor.”
I write today because our journey continues. Effective today, I will serve as president, Academic Medical Centers, Mass General Brigham, a role in which I will provide leadership for Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, including oversight of the clinical departments and our academic mission. With the creation of this broad new role, I see the opportunity to leverage, in service of our patients, the legacy and enormous strengths of our two founding member hospitals, Mass General and the Brigham, both true leaders in the practice and innovation of medicine.
I am inspired by the work ahead and the opportunity to partner with clinicians, staff and supporters across both great institutions. In my new role, I will work with clinical leaders across both hospitals to improve opportunities for collaboration not just in clinical care but across our prodigious research and educational programs, leading to even greater impact on our patients and community.
To support this transformation, Marcela del Carmen, MD, MPH, and Giles W. L. Boland, MD, will expand their roles to serve as presidents of Mass General and the Brigham, respectively, overseeing critical areas of patient care including quality and safety and staff wellness and engagement. In their new roles as presidents, they will report to me, while continuing their current roles as presidents of the physicians’ organizations (POs) at our academic medical centers, reporting to Mass General Brigham president and CEO Anne Klibanski, MD.
As I step into this new role, I want to take the opportunity to thank you for your ongoing and future support. As president, Academic Medical Centers, Mass General Brigham, I will continue to have responsibility for philanthropy at Mass General, and maintaining my connection to you is critical to me. We could not do the work we do without your commitment to and support of Mass General.
I look forward to continuing the journey with you.
David F. M. Brown, MD
President, Academic Medical Centers, Mass General Brigham
