In their 1810 proposal to create a hospital for everyone in the city of Boston, regardless of status or wealth, the founders of Massachusetts General Hospital wrote the famous words: “When in distress, every person becomes our neighbor.” That dedication to serving the local and global community has defined Mass General for more than two centuries and become a founding principle of the Mass General Brigham (MGB) healthcare system.
To recognize this longstanding commitment and their shared devotion to supporting the health of the local community, New Balance Foundation has made a visionary gift of $100 million to support the construction of the West Tower of the Phillip and Susan Ragon Building, which will anchor MGB’s world-class heart and vascular care. Founded in 1981, New Balance Foundation supports community-led initiatives aimed at driving lifelong health and the success of young people in the neighborhoods where New Balance associates live and work. In deep appreciation for this extraordinary contribution, Mass General will name the new facility the New Balance Foundation Tower.
“We believe deeply in the power of place — and the New Balance Foundation Tower will be a place of healing, hope and progress for generations to come.”
“We are deeply grateful to have in New Balance Foundation a like-minded partner committed to improving the lives of those in the communities it serves,” said David F. M. Brown, MD, president of academic medical centers at Mass General Brigham. “It is only fitting that our two organizations both emerged from humble beginnings in the city of Boston and whose community footprint and commitment to service now extends to those throughout New England, across the country and around the world.”
“New Balance Foundation is proud to support Mass General Brigham in their pursuit of advancing care for patients in Boston and beyond,” said Anne Davis, managing Trustee, New Balance Foundation. “This gift reflects our commitment to building healthier communities and supporting institutions that share our values of innovation, access and excellence. We believe deeply in the power of place — and the New Balance Foundation Tower will be a place of healing, hope and progress for generations to come.”
The Heart of a New Patient Experience
Slated to open in 2030, the nearly one million square-foot New Balance Foundation Tower is designed to meet the ever-growing demand for unparalleled care and services, while also offering a more comfortable and personalized experience for patients and their families.
As one of the building’s two defining towers, the New Balance Foundation Tower will be a cornerstone of Mass General Brigham’s award-winning Heart and Vascular Institute. This new space will bring together cardiology, cardiac surgery, vascular medicine, imaging and other related services in a centralized location — allowing patients to receive, under one roof, the continuum of care from diagnosis and treatment to recovery and follow-up. It will also contain five floors of private, single inpatient rooms, including cardiac ICU beds and acute care beds, a short-stay unit and four levels of underground parking.
The New Balance Foundation Tower will also include a conference center and 330-seat auditorium, which will support the training and education of the next generation of health professionals, reinforcing Mass General Brigham’s role as a world leader and destination in health professions education.
