Kathy and Roger Marino understand the importance of healthcare — for themselves, for their family and for the community. In 2022, Roger received exceptional care from Massachusetts General Hospital that he credits with saving his life. Kathy’s father also received excellent care at Mass General when he suffered a severe stroke. “The personal attention and uncompromising effort made a lasting impression — Mass General is so important to our city,” says Roger.
These experiences prompted them to want to give back. “We wanted to help provide a home for exceptional care in the future,” says Kathy. As a result, the Marinos named a pedestrian bridge connecting the two buildings that comprise Mass General Brigham (MGB) Healthcare Center in Waltham, Massachusetts.
“Mass General Brigham is essential to the future of the city. I am grateful for the care our family and I received, and we are glad to help make that care available to the wider community.”
The space is architecturally beautiful, with sweeping glass windows and a spiral staircase that extends up four floors. On the second floor, the Roger and Kathy Marino Pedestrian Bridge unites departments located in each of the buildings, improving travel time for patients and staff. More so, attaching a name to the structure and providing ample signage further assists patients with wayfinding when navigating medical appointments that span both buildings. “We are happy to be associated with part of the complex that so many people use,” says Roger.
Giving Back to a Community They Love
Kathy and Roger Marino were both born and raised in the Boston area, which made the Waltham location a natural choice for the couple. Mass General Brigham Healthcare Center (Waltham) has grown tremendously in recent years, providing care and services in fields ranging from pediatrics and primary care to orthopaedics and cancer treatment. MGB Healthcare Center (Waltham) also serves as a suburban outpost for the Corrigan Minehan Heart Center.

The Marinos’ support is part of their long history of philanthropic giving to institutions that they feel make our city great, including Northeastern University where they established the Marino Recreation Center. “Mass General Brigham is essential to the future of the city,” says Roger. “I am grateful for the care our family and I received, and we are glad to help make that care available to the wider community.”
Roger has been a business leader in the city for many decades. He was the “M” in EMC Data Storage Company, which he cofounded in 1979 with partner Richard Egan. The company was bought by Dell Inc. in 2015, in what remains the largest-ever acquisition deal in the technology sector. Kathy’s career is equally as vibrant and storied. She worked with Bob Woolf, an early sports agent who represented clients such as Larry Bird, Julius Erving and Larry King. She then went on to work for advertising firm Hill Holliday, and, later, for the Mikhail Gorbachev Foundation at Northeastern University.
“Being part of such groundbreaking business sectors gave me a sense of how exceptional our city is,” says Kathy. “Mass General Brigham embodies that excellence.”
