MGHfC Marathoners Run for Pediatric Cancer and Cystic Fibrosis

On April 18, 2011, 120 runners participated in the 115th Boston Marathon on behalf of MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC). Participants on two teams supported research and care initiatives in pediatric hematology-oncology and cystic fibrosis. As the primary sponsor of the 111 hematology-oncology runners, John Hancock Financial provided 100 bib numbers, and lead sponsor, the Farrah Fawcett Foundation, contributed $25,000. The Flatley Foundation was the lead sponsor of the nine cystic fibrosis runners, with a gift of $25,000. Patient partners, friends, family and Mass General supporters cheered on runners near the home of Howard Weinstein, MD, chief of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology. Kristin Santanello initially participated in the marathon program as a patient partner during cancer treatment as a child, and ran the marathon herself for the first time this year. Her father, Jon, was one of the members of the inaugural MGHfC marathon team.
