William Kastrinakis, MD, director of surgical oncology at the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center and chief of General Surgery at North Shore Medical Center, traces his commitment to defeating cancer to his father’s early death from gastric cancer.

Widely recognized as the surgeon of choice for many cancer operations at Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center, Dr. Kastrinakis performs the majority of the center’s melanoma, colon and pancreatic cancer surgeries. In addition, he supported the development of the center’s multidisciplinary Gastrointestinal Oncology Clinic. A leading advocate in the cancer care community, Dr. Kastrinakis plays a significant role in the annual North Shore Cancer WALK.

Dr. Kastrinakis also directs the Massachusetts General Hospital surgical resident rotation at Salem Hospital and serves as the quality lead in the Mass General Division of Community Surgery. His colleagues have honored him with several awards, including the Teaching Award given by Mass General residents and the Clinical Excellence Award from the surgical nurses at the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center.

“Bill has been committed to clinical excellence, to exceptional patient care, and to the education of young surgeons throughout his career,” says Keith Lillemoe, MD, chief of surgery at Mass General. “His excellent outcomes and compassion have made him the choice of many staff and physicians for general surgical procedures. In addition to his clinical work, Bill has been a program head, a quality champion and a thought leader on the North Shore.”
