The one hundred honoree: Trooper Marcell Strain

Badge, Inc. is an affiliation of Massachusetts state troopers, city police officers and local businesses that was founded in 1998 by Everett police officer Raoul Goncalves, its president. The organization brings together officers, friends and family in events that benefit worthy causes such as the Make a Wish Foundation, the Children’s Trust Fund and the Council on Aging.

Last year, Badge dedicated the proceeds of its annual Massachusetts Law Enforcement Harbor Cruise to support the Head and Neck Oncology Program within the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center.

The group’s decision was inspired by the courage of their friend and colleague, state trooper Marcell Strain. Trooper Strain, the vice president of Badge, was diagnosed with head and neck cancer.

“Not only has Marcell put up with the rigors of treatment with grace and dignity,” says his nominator, Lori J. Wirth, MD, “but he also made a personal and significant contribution to advancing the field of head and neck cancer by volunteering to become a clinical trial participant. Badge, Inc. and Marcell are bringing people together in a way that touches many lives.”
