The one hundred honoree: The Worrell Family

by
Mass General Giving

Together, the Worrell Family — Cindy, Geoff, and their children, Lindsay, Geoffrey and Ashley — waged a 12-year battle against Cindy’s non-Hodgkin lymphoma. In that time, the Worrells never failed to put others first, giving their time, energy and love to those in need.

Sadly, Cindy passed away in January 2016, after struggling with multiple relapses of her disease. However, Cindy and her family have left an indelible mark on the Mass General Cancer Center. For the past decade, they have volunteered and donated to both the Mass General Marathon Team and the Run of Hope in support of the MassGeneral Hospital for Children Cancer Center. In addition, every Christmas the family showered pediatric oncology patients with gifts.

Residents of Wareham, Massachusetts, the Worrells have been avid cheerleaders and sponsors of the Pan-Mass Challenge since 2003, cheering bikers on at the course’s final five-mile mark. This past Halloween, when Cindy was an inpatient at Mass General, the family went “reverse” trick-or-treating, distributing candy to caregivers.

“During her ordeal, Cindy never lost her hope and good cheer, always soliciting help for others and continuing to give of herself,” says one nominator.

“The Worrell Family has been helping to care for Cindy over these past many years, but they have never not asked what else they can do for our patients,” says Howard Weinstein, MD, chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at MGHfC. “They have inspired my staff and represent the best of the best in human kindness.”
