Lisa Rafferty, Pam Ahl, and Jane McGovern (pictured above) are friends and breast cancer survivors. As they went through treatment, they found a measure of humor in the indignities of cancer, as well as being struck by the scope and breath of pink ribbon merchandise.

Pam and Jane teamed up with Lisa, the co-author of “The MOMologues,” comedy about motherhood, to create “The MOMologues: Pink Ribbon Overdose,” a comedy about the breast cancer experience.

Performed at the Hard Rock Café in Boston in October 2010 and then at the Company Theater in Norwell in February 2011, the hour-long staged reading raised money for two nonprofits that support patients with breast cancer, The Ellie Fund and Learn, Live, Love Cancer Outreach.

The performers were film actress Erica McDermott (“The Fighter”), Ellie Fund Executive Director Julie Nations, and WCVB-TV newswomen Bianca de la Garza, Susan Wornick and Karen Holmes Ward.

The sass, candor and heart of the production strike a chord in actors and audiences alike. “The trick is to take a situation that is singularly unfunny,” Lisa told The Boston Globe, “and look at it from different angles to find the funny.”
