Donor Story

The one hundred honoree: Philip Gosnell

by
Mass General Giving

Philip Gosnell was a freshman at Yale University when he responded to a donation drive at the school for bone marrow donors. The drive was to find a match for a 16-year-old high school student with advanced leukemia.

Results soon showed that Philip was a perfect match for the young man in need. Despite never having met the recipient, Philip proceeded with the surgery involved with a bone marrow transplant. Seven months after the surgery, he was notified that the recipient was doing so well that he was out of the hospital and would soon be returning to high school.

Philip’s selflessness likely saved the life of this young man. He willingly helped a stranger in need; he is a true humanitarian.
