The one hundred honoree: Michael P. Vezeridis, MD

Michael Vezeridis, MD, has dedicated his life and career to surgical oncology. Born and educated in Greece, Dr. Vezeridis came to the U.S. where he completed a research fellowship at Mass General. After additional fellowship training in surgical oncology, Dr. Vezeridis entered into academic surgical oncology at Brown Medical School and practiced at Rhode Island Hospital and the Veterans Administration in Providence, Rhode Island. He is currently chief of Surgery at the Providence Veterans Administration Medical Center, co-director of the Multidisciplinary Melanoma and Cutaneous Oncology Program as well as professor of Surgery at Brown Medical School.

Throughout his career, Dr. Vezeridis has contributed significantly to all facets of cancer care. First and foremost, he has improved the lives of his patients with his medical expertise, attention to detail and caring bedside manner. He has tirelessly worked as a volunteer for various cancer organizations including the American Cancer Society and the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. He has written several chapters in major surgical textbooks and authored approximately 100 peer-reviewed journal articles. He has lectured nationally and internationally and trained numerous surgical residents and medical students at Brown Medical School. Many of his former residents and medical students regard him as one of their most inspiring and caring mentors. Dr. Vezeridis’ dedication to surgical oncology has inspired both of his sons to pursue medical careers.
