The one hundred honoree: Love Your Melon

by
Mass General Giving

Love Your Melon began with the simple idea of putting a hat on every child battling cancer in the United States.

The concept for Love Your Melon came about in an entrepreneurship class at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. Two friends, Zach and Brian, wanted to improve the lives of children battling cancer by putting a hat on every child in America who was struggling with the disease. After reaching their original goal of donating 45,000 hats, they set a new goal of donating $1 million to pediatric cancer research and providing immediate support to children and their families.

To date, more than 109,000 hats have been given to children, and more than $2.6 million has been raised for the fight against pediatric cancer. At the heart of these efforts is the Love Your Melon Campus Crew Program. Passionate college students across all 50 states raise awareness as they coordinate, plan and run beanie donation events all year long. The program’s grown to more than 11,000 crew members at 740 schools. One notable way the crew helps kids during their battle is with Superhero Adventures. From exciting day trips to helicopter rides, crew members create unforgettable adventures for children and their families.

When you’re a kid fighting the biggest battle of your life, not even a suit of armor will help. But a Love Your Melon hat just might make you feel a little bit stronger.
