Kevin Hughes, MD, one of the world’s foremost authorities on breast cancer, envisioned a software program that would calculate a patient’s risk for the disease based on family history. He made that vision a reality, and today thousands of women benefit from a personalized guide to their breast care decisions.

At the Mass General Cancer Center, Dr. Hughes serves as surgical director of both the Breast Screening Program and the Breast and Ovarian Cancer Genetics and Risk Assessment Program; co-director of the Avon Comprehensive Breast Evaluation Center; and medical director of the Bermuda Cancer Genetics and Risk Assessment Clinic. Dr. Hughes’ passion for reducing the risk of breast cancer manifests plainly in his almost three decades of clinical care and research.

Dr. Hughes’s research focuses on breast cancer risk assessment and genetics, as well as diagnosis and treatment. Most recently, he partnered with software engineers to create an online tool that applies ten of the leading risk assessment models and reconciles each model with a patient’s family history. With this up-to-date and comprehensive data analysis, a physician and patient can determine a personalized course of action.

“Kevin is a caring and thoughtful physician, a skilled surgeon, a talented researcher and a selfless contributor to the Department of Surgery,” says Keith Lillemoe, MD, surgeon-in-chief and chief of Surgery at Mass General.
