Joyce Kulhawik, best known as the Emmy award-winning arts and entertainment critic for CBS-BOSTON (WBZ-TV 1981-2008), is currently lending her expertise as an arts advocate and cancer crusader all over the region.
Joyce is a three-time cancer survivor and since 1979 has told her story to thousands of people all over New England in schools, hospitals, nursing homes, oncology clinics, malls and businesses to educate and raise funds to advance patient care. In 1991 Joyce testified before Congress on the 20th anniversary of The National Cancer Act to back a proposal to double the federal budget for cancer research. Since 1983 she has served as the honorary chairperson for Daffodil Days, and continues to raise millions of dollars for the American Cancer Society as a member of their New England Advisory Board. The ACS has honored Kulhawik with its National Bronze Medal Award. Kulhawik also received the 1994 Gilda Radner Award from the Wellness Community in Greater Boston “for engendering inspiration in cancer patients via her own valiant fight with the disease.”
Joyce was among the earliest supporters of the effort to open the American Cancer Society Astra Zeneca Hope Lodge in Boston. She and her husband opened their home for the very first fundraiser to kick off the campaign.
With her vibrant personality, openness and gift for connecting with her community, Joyce is a powerful advocate for both the arts and the fight against cancer.
