The one hundred honoree: José Baselga, MD, PhD

José Baselga, MD, PhD, is the newly appointed Chief of Hematology Oncology and Associate Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center.

Dr. Baselga is internationally acclaimed for his clinical research in breast cancer and studies of growth factor receptors and downstream molecules as targets for cancer therapy. He has made important contributions to the clinical development of several new agents, including the insulin-like growth factor receptor inhibitors trastuzumab (Herceptin®) and lapatinib (Tykerb®) and a variety of antiangiogenic agents.

Dr. Baselga received his MD and PhD from the Universidad Autonoma of Barcelona and trained at the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, the State University of New York and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Most recently he served as the chair of the Division of Medical Oncology, Hematology and Radiation Oncology at the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital in Barcelona, Spain. He is also a professor of Medicine at the Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona, scientific chair of the Spanish Breast Cancer cooperative group SOLTI and the current president of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO).
