Mass General Giving

Joanne LaFrancesca, RN, nurse director of the Infusion Unit in the Mass General Cancer Center for 22 years, was a tireless patient advocate, dedicated oncology nurse, mentor, role model and leader in oncology nursing. Throughout her years at Mass General, Joanne guided the development and growth of the Cancer Center’s Infusion Unit. With the increase in patient acuity and volume and development of complex treatments and protocols, Joanne consistently focused on providing compassionate, safe care to every patient. As a nurse leader, she was committed to maximizing quality of life, enhancing autonomy, and making sure patients felt cared for and cared about. She was committed to providing continuity of care for patients, facilitating seamless transition from one treatment area to another and establishing ongoing resources for Cancer Center patients and their families. In collaboration with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Joanne helped to develop and implement the Longitudinal Medical Record electronic flow sheet. This instrument is a critical documentation and communication tool that is being used among all oncology caregivers at Mass General, Dana-Farber and the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center.
