The one hundred honoree: Jessica C. Thurston Memorial Fund

by
Mass General Giving

A graduate of Bridgewater State College, Jessica Thurston lived a life complete with friends, travel and a love of running. At the age of 27, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, but continued to display a tremendous amount of courage and resilience as she lived her life with hope. She had a vibrant personality and a smile that was contagious. Sadly, she lost her life two years after her diagnosis. Her family, grateful for the expert and compassionate care Jess received at Mass General, wanted to give back.

This led to a small group of Jess’s family and friends starting the Jessica C. Thurston Memorial Fund. The fund’s motto is to “live life,” which was Jess’s personal motto. The 3rd Annual “Run For Jess” event was held last summer with nearly 300 participants, volunteers, spectators and children. The Run for Jess and other fundraising events have raised nearly $22,500 to support breast cancer research at Mass General and other cancer-related charities.

Since losing Jess, her family and friends have dedicated their lives to keeping her memory alive. It is their sincere hope that someday soon no family will have to lose a young, vibrant woman to this dreaded disease.
