The one hundred honoree: James Silva

Jamie Silva goes above and beyond the expectations of his role as he continually works to create a safe, comfortable and responsive experience for all his patients.

Jamie is the director of Radiation Oncology at Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center in Danvers, Mass. From the smallest detail to the biggest challenges, he is personally invested in the well-being of everyone who comes through the door seeking treatment. And nobody knows that better than James McIntyre, MD, the chief of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the North Shore Cancer Center. “Jamie always goes the extra step,” says Dr. McIntyre. “He wants to make sure that patients are treated in the safest manner possible.”

Just one example of this extra attention occurred recently. The center was treating a patient who required a set-up that was extremely technical, and not a situation they dealt with every day. Jamie sat down, assessed the specific situation, and created a customized checklist to eliminate any day-to-day variation in the treatment. It was just one example, with one patient, that represents the way he approaches his role.

His patients and colleagues are sure to notice the extra steps that Jamie takes to get the job done. Others notice his efforts, as well. According to Dr. McIntyre, “Whenever external surveyors visit the department they are always impressed with his development of work flows which enhance patient safety.”
