The one hundred honoree: James G. Crosby

Mass General Giving

Since 1990, James Crosby, founder and owner of Crosby’s Marketplace, has donated his time and rallied his vendors to supply the many hundreds of cases of water, soda and juice that help fuel thousands of participants in the annual North Shore Cancer WALK.

Jim, the longstanding chair of the WALK’s refreshments committee, was touched by cancer at an early age, losing a 12-year-old cousin to the disease. Most recently, Jim’s eldest son, David, who served as president of Crosby’s Marketplace, died of an incurable form of cancer. In David’s honor, Jim and 100 of his employees participated in the Care Dimensions 2015 Walk for Hospice, making a significant financial contribution through the company’s sponsorship and individual donations.

In recognition of Jim’s exemplary commitment to the fight against cancer, the Resource Center at the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center was named in his family’s honor. He has also received several other community service awards, including the Salem Volunteer of the Year and Red Cross Community Hero.

“Jim’s role on the WALK’s refreshment committee entails a sizable time and financial commitment that he generously undertakes every year,” one nominator says. “He is a kind, selfless and generous individual who has made a positive impact on his family, friends, employees and community, including those affected by cancer.”
