The one hundred honoree: Illuminations Committee

by
Mass General Giving

Since 2001, Illuminations has installed a rotating exhibition of art throughout the Cancer Center. Illuminations manager Stefanie Ryan and her committee of volunteers bring creativity and joy to every part of the Cancer Center where patients spend their time. With great energy and care, the team displays multimedia works in every waiting room and other clinical areas, where they offer pleasure and comfort to patients and their families. And the artists who participate in Illuminations gain a highly appreciative audience.

Frequent contributors include painter Ellen Hurley, a Mass General staff member, “As patients and family members await treatment — a time of great anxiety — art offers temporary relief from stress,” says Ellen, “and reminds people that there is, indeed, still beauty in the world.”

Photographer Robert van de Graaff says, “Illuminations lives up to its name, brightening the spirits of patients and families.”

“As a cancer patient, I spent many hours in waiting rooms,” says photographer Katherine Kominis, “Art creates an environment that feels more like home. Stefanie and her volunteers have given comfort to thousands of patients through Illuminations.”
