The one hundred honoree: Ikuko Harris

by
Mass General Giving

In 2008, Iko Harris established the Stephan L. Harris Center for Chordoma Care at Mass General. Her generosity created a place where patients and families facing life-threatening chordoma, a rare bone cancer, can receive skilled care from expert clinicians.

When Iko’s husband, Stephan, was diagnosed with recurrent chordoma, he chose Mass General and Henry J. Mankin, MD, then the chair of the Orthopaedic Department and surgeons Frank X. Pedlow, MD, and Frederick G. Barker, MD, and later Francis J. Hornicek, MD, PhD, chief of the Orthopaedic Oncology Service. After a valiant effort, Mr. Harris succumbed to chordoma in 2005.

When Iko made a gift in honor of her husband, she knew that Dr. Hornicek, was the right person to direct the Harris Chordoma Center that draws upon Mass General’s multidisciplinary resources to advance clinical care and research

In addition, Iko established the Stephan L. Harris Family Fund, a fund to support patients and families in need as they receive care at Mass General.
