The one hundred honoree: Heather Unruh

Mass General Giving

Heather Unruh, co-anchor of Boston’s WCVB/ABC Channel 5 News and previously a medical reporter, has raised awareness of lung cancer and become a potent advocate for lung cancer education and research. A disease stigmatized by its strong link with smoking, Heather has educated her large viewing audience in the complexities of this disease, the nation’s number one cancer killer and a disease that also affects nonsmokers.

Heather has received numerous awards from the American Cancer Society and Uniting Against Lung Cancer for her compelling portrayals of patients with lung cancer.

In March 2010, Heather aired a series on Chronicle, WCVB’s TV news magazine, that wove together stories of patients and families — including her own mother’s battle with lung cancer — with reports on the cutting-edge science of lung cancer treatment. This riveting piece has earned her much well-deserved acclaim.

“Using her deep understanding of the disease and her great gifts as a communicator,” writes Jeffrey Engelman, MD, PhD, director of the Center for Thoracic Cancers at the Mass General Cancer Center, “Heather has had a profound and positive impact on the well-being of her audience and transformed public perception of this disease and its victims.”
