The one hundred honoree: Golfers Against Cancer – Boston

by
Mass General Giving

Golfers Against Cancer was founded in Houston, Texas, in 1997 by golfing friends who wanted to support two of their own who were diagnosed with cancer. It has since expanded to many other cities, including Boston, where Lee Kennedy and Robert Howe (pictured) took up the reins in 2006. When Mr. Howe’s business associate’s daughter was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 30, Golfers Against Cancer decided to direct its support to breast cancer research under the direction of Paul Goss, mD, PhD, of the Cancer Center. Dr. Goss’s 2003 landmark study established that a novel class of smart drugs is associated with increased survival in post-menopausal women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer; this finding changed clinical practice worldwide. Since then, studies led by Dr. Goss have continued to alter the day-to-day care of women with breast cancer.
