The one hundred honoree: Fredrica A. Preston, RNC, NP, AOCN

by
Mass General Giving

From 1995 to 2010, Fredrica (Ricky) Preston, RNC, NP, AOCN, was the sole nurse practitioner in medical oncology at the Mass General/North Shore Cancer in Danvers, Mass. With great commitment, compassion and knowledge, she quickly established an advanced practice that enables North Shore residents to access exemplary cancer care without traveling to Boston.

With devotion, energy and skill, Ricky helps each of her patients fight their disease and focus on quality of life. Ricky is often the first person to arrive for her shift and the last one to leave, and on her personal time, she often visits very ill patients at home.

Ricky is a superb and sensitive communicator, whether presenting patients with a harrowing diagnosis, making the complexities of treatment understandable or helping patients make the most informed decisions.

A cancer clinician of national renown, Ricky is a mentor to the nursing staff. Her extensive oncology nursing background allowed her to become a resource for all nurses at the center and she was instrumental in inspiring many of her colleagues to publish and present on the local, regional and national levels.

Ricky respects her patients and colleagues, and in return they have the utmost respect for her. Her nominators write “Fredrica Preston embodies what the one hundred represents. She is an asset to the Mass General community and to her patients.”
