Evangelos Gragoudas, MD, director of the Retina Service in the Ophthalmology Department of Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary, is a world authority on the diagnosis and management of intraocular tumors.
His scientific discoveries include developing therapies for ocular malignancies and retinal neovascular diseases that have saved the eyesight and lives of countless patients. Dr. Gragoudas pioneered the use of proton beam irradiation therapy in the treatment of ocular melanoma, a safe and effective modality that has benefited more than 15,000 patients worldwide.
The Charles Edward Whitten Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Gragoudas continues to investigate the epidemiology, genetics and molecular biology of uveal melanoma to further improve diagnosis and treatment of this potentially fatal disease.
