The one hundred honoree: Estelle Sugarman

by
Mass General Giving

Estelle Sugarman is a dedicated supporter of the Mass General Cancer Center. In 2007, after the death of her husband Rubin, Estelle created the Rubin and Estelle Sugarman Melanoma Endowed Fund. The fund supports the research of Rubin’s physicians, Donald Lawrence, MD, clinical director of the Center for Melanoma, and Hensin Tsao, MD, PhD, who directs the Melanoma and Pigmented Lesion Center and the Melanoma Genetics Program.

“My hope is that this donation will enable discoveries that will save the lives of future melanoma patients,” says Estelle.

Since its founding, Estelle and her family have continued to generously enlarge the fund. She has also become an ardent and well-informed advocate for the Mass General Cancer Center, both in Boston and in Palm Beach, where she is a winter resident.

“My mother has attended a number of Mass General events over the years,” writes Jay Sugarman. “Through these gatherings and her own research, she has learned a lot about the work being done with melanoma and eagerly shares this information with family and friends. While she is very modest about her contributions, my mother is a strong advocate of this life-saving research.”
