Charles Sawyers, MD, a physician-scientist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, is a trailblazer in the field of personalized medicine. He and his colleagues develop molecularly focused treatments for patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and prostate cancer.

In 2009, Dr. Sawyers was awarded the Lasker Clinical Award for his role in developing two key drugs that transformed CML from a fatal disease into one that could be effectively treated. He continues to mine new information about complex diseases as he investigates and develops innovative drugs and treatments, creating options for patients facing challenging illnesses.

Dr. Sawyers received the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for his achievements in 2013. Known not just as a brilliant physician-scientist but as a kind and compassionate healthcare professional, Dr. Sawyers offers brighter, more hopeful futures to patients and their families.
