Carl Frithsen, RN, became an oncology nurse to help guide people through what can be the most difficult time in their lives and, to the benefit of many, he fulfills that admirable ambition every day.
Carl cares for patients compassionately and skillfully—before, during and after treatment—as part of the medical oncology team of Lauren Dias, MD, at the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center. But Carl’s highly professional care often has an impact far beyond the walls of the Cancer Center, as nominator Jane Burton recounts:
“I am 86 years old and live in Florida. When I was diagnosed with ‘inoperable liver cancer,’ I knew the one place of hope was MGH! At a neighbor’s suggestion, I called the office of Dr. Lauren Dias. Having only ‘met’ me on the phone, Carl directed me to a team of liver cancer experts. Only a week went by between my call for help and the consultation at Mass General. By accelerating the process, I believe Carl has saved my life.
“There is a lot more than medical skill, latest equipment and expert nursing involved in excellent care. It is the mostly intangible emotions and morale of the patient. From my first call, Carl treated me with respect and compassion. He returned every single call immediately, answered every question (no matter how stupid), and anticipated issues I had not thought of. Carl’s comfort and support bridged the distance between Florida and Boston.”
Jane is just one of many patients who have called or sent cards to Carl’s nurse manager, Roger Collins, RN, letting him know just how compassionate, thorough and knowledgeable Carl is. “Carl is an excellent oncology nurse and I am proud to have him as part of my team,” says Roger.
