Bonnie Strudas, RN, BSN, OCN, was Emily List’s infusion nurse during her 10 months of chemotherapy at the Mass General Cancer Center. Bonnie developed a special rapport with one young woman.
“From the start, Bonnie’s high level of competence and commitment inspired our trust,” says Karen List, Emily’s mother. “She made Emily, her dad and me feel that we were on a quest for a cure. With a big smile, good cheer and patience, Bonnie explained every step to Emily, making her a full partner in her own treatment,” continues Karen. “And she carried it out with great discipline and attention to detail.”
Bonnie was also attentive to Emily’s personal interests, and threw her a surprise birthday party with flowers, a gift and a huge cake. “Emily was serving slices all day,” says Karen.
Although Emily’s treatment is over, Bonnie and the Lists remain in touch. “We feel she’s our ally for life,” says Karen. “We met many bright lights at Mass General. But we think Bonnie is neon.”
