The one hundred honoree: Bill Rodgers

by
Mass General Giving

Bill Rodgers is a legendary runner, prostate cancer survivor and healthcare advocate. A fixture in New York and Boston marathons throughout the 1970s and four-time winner of the Boston Marathon, Bill inspires hometown pride and deafening cheers along the course of the run. While Bostonians claim him as their own, Bill is world-renowned for his achievements.

What is less known about Bill is how active he is promoting health and fitness and urging others to join him in a lifelong pursuit of well-being. He has partnered with Mass General at the MGH Health and Fitness Expo, provided training tips to the Mass General Marathon Team and leveraged his fame to benefit prostate cancer research and care at the Mass General Cancer Center.

In 2009, Bill wore an “Athletes for a Cure” singlet and ran for the Prostate Cancer Foundation to raise awareness of a disease that affects one in six American men. Once again, Bill is out front, serving as a vibrant role model who leads by example.
