The one hundred honoree: Barbara Hawkins

by
Mass General Giving

If the Friends of the Mass General Cancer Center gave an award for most valuable player, it would undoubtedly go to Barbara Hawkins. A founding member and treasurer of the Friends board 26 years ago, she is still its treasurer and one of its most active members.

After her mother died of cancer, Barbara devoted her volunteer life to the Cancer Center while raising her two daughters. A graduate of Harvard Business School, where her husband is on the faculty, Barbara is ardent and skillful at raising funds for amenities that ease the toll of treatment on patients. And from the start, Barbara has scrupulously maintained the financial records of the Friends, ensuring that its grants for support care services for patients and their families are put to efficient and sound use.

Barbara is also an extraordinary spokeswoman for the Friends as well as a brilliant liaison to Mass General. The Friends is a valued asset to the Cancer Center, thanks to Barbara’s great competence and compassion as well as her passion for the cause.
