The one hundred honoree: American Cancer Society

by
Mass General Giving

The American Cancer Society benefits millions of Americans with its programs in cancer research, prevention, early detection, education and patient support.

These services include its nationwide network of 31 state-of-the-art American Cancer Society Hope Lodges®, which provides gracious accommodations at no cost to patients and their caregivers while undergoing treatment. Recognizing that patients often must travel far from home to obtain the best care, the American Cancer Society eases their emotional and financial burden.

Since opening in November 2008, the Society’s AstraZeneca Hope Lodge Center in Boston has provided nurturing, home-like lodging to nearly 1,000 patients from 47 states and 11 countries. More than one-third of these patients are in treatment at Mass General Cancer Center, an early supporter of the campaign to build Boston’s Hope Lodge.

Minutes from hospitals and public transportation, the handicap accessible facility has 40 private suites. Patients mingle with each other, staff and volunteers in a caring and compassionate atmosphere. Inviting social areas include a library, a music room, a courtyard garden, an educational resource center, a kitchen and a dining room. Grateful patients find that their stay at the Hope Lodge is part of their healing process.
