As health care workers at Massachusetts General Hospital continue to serve on the front lines of the hospital’s COVID-19 response, many are managing long, varied work schedules, making it hard to run important errands like grocery shopping. Some workers are also facing unexpected financial hardships because of the pandemic.

“Stop & Shop is helping us to focus on what’s most important right now — taking care of patients.”

In response to these challenges, Stop & Shop has donated nearly $30,000 in monetary and in-kind gifts to support Mass General health care workers. The company initially partnered with the Beasley Media Group’s Healthcare Heroes initiative to help raise $100,000 for Mass General’s Emergency Response Fund, which currently supports the hospital’s immediate response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Stop & Shop made a $10,000 donation, including $5,000 in gift cards.

Wanting to do more, the company provided a two-week grocery delivery service that allowed Mass General employees to order groceries online. Stop & Shop then delivered the orders to the hospital’s campus and waived all delivery fees.

“Stop & Shop is helping us to focus on what’s most important right now — taking care of patients,” says Reiner Henson B. See, MD, a Mass General neurologist, who participated in the grocery delivery service.

And the support did not stop there.

Most recently, Stop & Shop made their largest donation, this time in the form of non-perishable essential groceries to help ease the burden for 500 Mass General employees. Volunteers from Mass General, Stop & Shop and the Beasley Media Group assembled bags that contained peanut butter, jelly, cereal, pasta, pasta sauce, paper towels and toilet paper. The care packages were distributed with a focus on supporting people undergoing financial hardship. As employees picked up the groceries, they expressed sincere gratitude and appreciation for the service, which was making their lives a little easier.

“Stop & Shop is proud to support Mass General and to show our appreciation for frontline health care heroes.”

Says Jennifer Brogan, director of external communications and community relations at Stop & Shop: “We recognize the incredible effort put forth by Mass General’s staff to care for patients around the clock during this crisis. With our donation and by offering expedited delivery and groceries right to the hospital, we hope we’re making grocery shopping a little easier. Stop & Shop is proud to support Mass General and to show our appreciation for frontline health care heroes.”
